Profiling a bead moulding
Category: Shop ProceduresDate: 2023-02-23
I particularly dislike using chemical strippers for refinishing pianos. For the current project, 1940s Steinway console, I chose to remove most of the old finish with hand scraping. The bead moulding on the keybed front presented a challenge. Small straight scrapers and sandpaper could cleanup the beading, but since it had be banged up a bit, wood fillers would need to be used to re-profile. That process did not appeal to me. In other words, the situation gave me an opportunity to make a custom scraper at the milling machine. The result was particularly satisfying.
